This setting decides which descriptive field on the marking range Classter reads from when converting a Student's mark into GPA points. A marking range can carry more than one descriptive label for the same score band (for example a primary label and an alternate label used specifically for GPA reporting), and this setting chooses which one feeds the GPA calculation.
