Overview
Display label: Use automatic _Group_ creation based on _Subject_
Setting ID: Auto_Create_Group_From_Subject
Location: Main Settings > General Settings > Higher Education Customization, group Basic Settings
What This Setting Does
When this setting is enabled, Classter automatically creates a matching _Group_ (Class/Section) whenever a _Subject_ (Course/Module) is created, so staff do not have to manually build a _Group_ for every _Subject_ before students can be enrolled in it.
Where It Is Used
This setting has no dedicated screen. It runs automatically in the background as part of the automatic _Group_ creation process, which is triggered when a _Subject_ is created or saved.
Business Logic / Behavior
- Only takes effect when Higher Education Mode (Enable Configuration for Higher Education) is enabled, and the tenant’s license (Editions) includes the Free or College flag.
- When both conditions are true and this setting is enabled, creating or saving a _Subject_ automatically creates a corresponding _Group_ if one does not already exist for that _Subject_ in the period.
- The name of the automatically created _Group_ starts from the _Subject_’s description (truncated to 100 characters) and can be extended with the related _Grade_ and _Stream_ depending on the two grade-stream naming settings.
- If a _Group_ already exists and is marked as the default _Group_ for the _Subject_, it is reused and updated instead of creating a duplicate.
- The _Group_ Type assigned to a newly created _Group_ is controlled by Default _Group_ Type for the Automatic _Group_ Creation.
- If this setting is disabled, no _Group_ is created automatically; the link between a _Subject_ and its _Group_ must be built manually.
Example(s)
Alpha Institute. Maria P., the Curriculum Officer, creates a new _Subject_ called Introduction to Marketing (code MKT101) for the Spring 2026 period. With Auto_Create_Group_From_Subject enabled and Higher Education Mode active, Classter automatically creates a _Group_ named Introduction to Marketing and links it to MKT101 – Maria does not need to open the _Group_ screen to build it herself.
If the setting were disabled, Maria would instead have to go to Groups > Create and manually build an Introduction to Marketing _Group_ before students could be enrolled in MKT101.
When to Use
When to Enable
- The institution runs an academic structure where each _Subject_ needs its own _Group_ for scheduling and enrollment.
- The institution wants to reduce manual administrative work when onboarding a large catalog of Subjects each semester.
When to Disable
- The institution builds Groups independently of Subjects, for example several Subjects taught within one shared Group.
- Groups are organized by cohort or other criteria rather than one Group per Subject, and should continue to be created and linked manually.
Notes
- Prerequisites: Higher Education Mode (Enable Configuration for Higher Education / Xrisi_parametropoihshs_kolegiou) must be enabled, and the tenant’s Editions license must include the Free or College flag.
- Related settings: Add the related _Grade_-_Stream_ as part of the _Group_ name when automatic _Group_ creation is enabled (Xrisi_TaksisKateuthinsis_AutomatiDimiourgiaTmimatos in Higher Education Customization > Basic Settings)
- Related settings: Update the name of the _Group_ using the related _Grade_ – _Stream_ of the _Group_ saved. (Xrisi_TaksisKateuthinsis_AutomatiEnimerosiTmimatos in Higher Education Customization > Basic Settings)
- Related settings: Default _Group_ Type for the Automatic _Group_ Creation (Typos_Tmimatos_AutomatiDimiourgiaTmimatos in Higher Education Customization > Basic Settings)
- Related settings: Enable _Student_ enrollment view based on enrollment history (College_Enable_Enrollments_History_View in Higher Education Customization > Basic Settings)
K-12 vs Higher Education: Classter’s code evaluates this setting together with the Higher Education Mode gate – the automatic _Group_ creation logic only runs when Higher Education Mode is enabled (with a Free or College Editions license) AND this setting is enabled. In K-12 or school configurations where Higher Education Mode is disabled, this setting has no effect even if it is switched on.
