Default Class Type for the Automatic Class Creation

Updated on July 8, 2026

Overview

Display label: Default _Group_ Type for the Automatic _Group_ Creation

Setting ID: Typos_Tmimatos_AutomatiDimiourgiaTmimatos

Location: Main Settings > General Settings > Higher Education Customization, group Basic Settings

What This Setting Does

This setting lets an administrator choose which _Group_ Type (for example Standard Lecture Group or Lab Group) is automatically assigned to every new _Group_ that Classter creates through the automatic _Group_ creation process.

Where It Is Used

This is a dropdown on the Higher Education Customization tab itself; its value is applied automatically when a new _Group_ is created by the automatic process, and has no other dedicated screen. The list of _Group_ Types offered in the dropdown is managed under Main Settings > Parametric Lists > _Group_ Types.

Business Logic / Behavior

  • Only takes effect when Use automatic _Group_ creation based on _Subject_ (Auto_Create_Group_From_Subject) is enabled and Higher Education Mode is active – it is read only inside that same automatic _Group_ creation process.
  • Applies only when a brand-new _Group_ is created because no existing default _Group_ was found for the _Subject_; it has no effect when an existing _Group_ is instead being updated.
  • The selected _Group_ Type is written to the new _Group_’s type field at the moment of creation.
  • If no value is selected, newly auto-created Groups are saved without a _Group_ Type.

Example(s)

Alpha Institute maintains _Group_ Types Standard Lecture Group and Lab Group. This setting is set to Standard Lecture Group. When the _Subject_ Organic Chemistry (code CHM201) is created and no _Group_ yet exists for it, Classter automatically creates a _Group_ named Organic Chemistry and assigns it the _Group_ Type Standard Lecture Group.

When to Use

Set this to the _Group_ Type that best represents the majority of automatically created Groups at the institution, for example a general Lecture or Standard type, so newly created Groups are already classified without any manual follow-up step. Leave it unset only if the institution prefers to assign _Group_ Types manually after each automatic creation. Review the choice whenever new _Group_ Types are added to the parametric list, since this setting always points to a single fixed type.

Notes

  • Prerequisites: Use automatic _Group_ creation based on _Subject_ (Auto_Create_Group_From_Subject) must be enabled, Higher Education Mode must be active, and at least one _Group_ Type must exist in the _Group_ Types parametric list.
  • Related settings: Use automatic _Group_ creation based on _Subject_ (Auto_Create_Group_From_Subject in Higher Education Customization > Basic Settings)
  • Related settings: Add the related _Grade_-_Stream_ as part of the _Group_ name when automatic _Group_ creation is enabled (Xrisi_TaksisKateuthinsis_AutomatiDimiourgiaTmimatos in Higher Education Customization > Basic Settings)
  • Related settings: Update the name of the _Group_ using the related _Grade__Stream_ of the _Group_ saved. (Xrisi_TaksisKateuthinsis_AutomatiEnimerosiTmimatos in Higher Education Customization > Basic Settings)
  • Related configuration: _Group_ Types parametric list (CdClassTypes, company-scoped) – manage entries under Main Settings > Parametric Lists > _Group_ Types.

K-12 vs Higher Education: Confirmed in code, this setting’s value is read and applied only inside the automatic _Group_-creation routine that is gated by Higher Education Mode and by Use automatic _Group_ creation based on _Subject_, and only for newly created Groups. In K-12 configurations where Higher Education Mode is disabled, or where automatic _Group_ creation from _Subject_ is off, this setting has no effect.
