This setting narrows down the list of Groups offered in the Alternative Group fields of an admission Application when a back-office Employee is filling it in. Instead of showing every Group in the institution, the dropdown is filtered to only show Groups that belong to the Zone selected here. This is a per-period setting, meaning it can be configured differently for each academic period.
