What This Setting Does
Outcomes in Classter are the learning-outcome achievement marks recorded against a _Student_ for a _Subject_, based on the marking categories attached to that _Subject_’s examinations. They are what a _Student_ sees on their Collected Outcomes view, showing which learning outcomes/goals they achieved and in which _Subject_.
This setting controls the time range of academic periods whose outcomes are taken into account: Current Period restricts outcomes to the academic period that is currently active, while All Periods includes outcomes recorded across every academic period, not just the current one.
Where It Is Used
Outcomes are displayed to _Students_ on the Academic tab of their Student Portfolio, in the Collected Outcomes view, and are calculated per _Subject_ from the examination categories (Category Grades) configured for that _Subject_. There is no separate screen dedicated to this setting itself; it takes effect automatically wherever collected outcomes are shown or calculated.
Business Logic / Behavior
- Default value is Current Period (value 0): only outcomes recorded in the currently active academic period are shown.
- Setting the value to All Periods (value 1) includes outcomes recorded in every academic period the _Student_ has been enrolled in, not only the current one.
- The setting has exactly two options; there is no option to show only previous periods (that distinction exists on a separate, similarly named setting used for a different outcomes report).
- Applies at the _Student_ level: it changes how much history is pulled together when Classter assembles a _Student_’s outcomes, not which outcomes exist or how they are defined.
Example(s)
Alpha Institute tracks learning outcomes such as Critical Thinking and Written Communication against _Subjects_ like Introduction to Marketing (MKT101).
Student Sofia Ioannou completed MKT101 in the Fall 2025 period and is now enrolled in a different _Subject_ during the current Spring 2026 period.
Before: with Show_Outcomes_For_The_Following_Academic_Periods set to Current Period (the default), Sofia’s Collected Outcomes view for Spring 2026 does not show the outcomes she achieved in MKT101 back in Fall 2025.
After: the institution changes the setting to All Periods. Sofia’s Collected Outcomes view now includes the outcomes from MKT101 in Fall 2025 alongside anything recorded in the current Spring 2026 period.
When to Use
Choose Current Period when outcomes should reflect only what a _Student_ is achieving right now, keeping the Collected Outcomes view focused on the active academic period and avoiding clutter from past terms.
Choose All Periods when the institution wants a cumulative, program-long view of a _Student_’s learning-outcome achievement across their entire academic history, for example to support accreditation reporting or long-term competency tracking that spans multiple periods.
Notes
- Prerequisites: learning outcomes must be configured on _Subjects_ through Category Grades/examination categories before there is any outcome data for this setting to filter.
- Related settings: Students can have more than one _Group_ per _Subject_ enrollment (College_multiple_groups_enrolments in Higher Education Customization > Basic Settings)

K-12 vs Higher Education: this setting is grouped under Higher Education Customization by product design rather than by an enforced Higher Education Mode gate. Learning outcomes and their period-based reporting are a competency-based curriculum concept most commonly used by Higher Education programs that track achievement across _Subjects_ and terms, but the underlying outcomes data and Collected Outcomes view are calculated from Category Grades and examinations, which are not exclusive to Higher Education Mode.
