SCT Default Purpose

Updated on July 7, 2026

1 min to read

Overview

The Default purpose of the SEPA Credit Transfer/SCTDefaultPurpose is a setting located under Financial Settings > General Settings > Other Payments, in the Transactions Verification Codes sub-group.

What This Setting Does

This setting lets the institution choose a default purpose code or description to include on SEPA Credit Transfer verification QR codes. The purpose is a short indicator, used in the SEPA banking standard, that tells the receiving bank and account holder what type of payment the transfer relates to (for example, an education-related payment).

Where It Is Used

This setting affects the purpose code embedded in SEPA Credit Transfer verification QR codes generated on invoices or payment documents. The setting is configured at:

  • Main Menu > Financial Settings > General Settings > Other Payments > Transactions Verification Codes – this is where the institution selects the default SEPA Credit Transfer purpose from a fixed list of options.

Business Logic / Behavior

  • This is a single-select setting, offering a fixed list of standard SEPA purpose codes to choose from.
  • The chosen purpose is only relevant when the Verification QrCode Type is set to the SEPA Credit Transfer option.
  • If left unset, SEPA Credit Transfer QR codes are generated without a purpose code, or with a default/blank value.

Example(s)

Example National Institute uses SEPA Credit Transfer QR codes on its tuition invoices. The finance office sets the Default Purpose to the standard education-related purpose code ‘EDUC’. When a EUR 600 tuition installment invoice is generated, its QR code automatically carries the purpose code ‘EDUC’ alongside the EUR 600 amount, helping both the institution and the payer’s bank correctly classify the payment.

When to Use

Use this setting when the institution has enabled SEPA Credit Transfer verification QR codes and wants transfers generated through them to carry a consistent, recognizable purpose code.

Notes

Prerequisite: this setting is only effective when Verification QrCode Type/VerificationQrCodeType is set to the SEPA Credit Transfer option and Enable transactions unique verification QrCodes for the following types/EnableTransactionsUniqueVerificationQrCodes is turned on.

  • Verification QrCode Type/VerificationQrCodeType (Financial Settings > General Settings > Other Payments > Transactions Verification Codes)
  • Creditor Reference for SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT)/SCTCreditorReference (Financial Settings > General Settings > Other Payments > Transactions Verification Codes)
  • Enable transactions unique verification QrCodes for the following types/EnableTransactionsUniqueVerificationQrCodes (Financial Settings > General Settings > Other Payments > Transactions Verification Codes)

K-12 vs Higher Education: This setting behaves the same regardless of whether Higher Education Mode (Enable Configuration for Higher Education/Xrisi_parametropoihshs_kolegiou) is enabled or disabled.
