Overview

Enable Commissions is a setting found under Financial Settings > General Settings > Price Lists, Fees & Taxes, in the Price List Configuration sub-group.

What This Setting Does

This setting turns on the commissions feature within the financial module. Commissions typically represent amounts owed to a third party (such as an agent, partner, or referrer) based on fees or payments collected from students. When enabled, the platform makes commission-related configuration and functionality available for use in the financial area; when disabled, commission-related functionality is not exposed.

Where It Is Used

This setting was found referenced directly in the Portal’s financial screens, where it controls whether commission-related fields and options are shown. The main places affected are:

  • Main Menu > Financial Settings > Dropdown lists > Pricing Categories > New/Edit Pricing Category > Commissions section – when this setting is enabled, a Commissions section appears on the pricing category form, letting staff enable a commission, set a commission percentage, choose how the commission is calculated, and allow negative commission amounts.
  • Main Menu > Financial – the discount setup form used when configuring price list discounts also checks this setting to decide whether to expose commission-related fields on a discount.
  • Student/Parent Portal financial screens – when a user with agent rights views financial and payment information, this setting also determines whether commission-related information is shown to them.

Business Logic / Behavior

  • This is an on/off (checkbox) setting.
  • When turned on, the commissions feature becomes active and available for configuration in the financial settings and related workflows.
  • When turned off, commission-related functionality is not available for use.
  • This is a master switch that must be enabled before any commission rates, rules, or reports elsewhere in the financial module can be configured or used.

Example(s)

Fictional example: Language Institute A works with independent enrollment agents who receive a 10% commission on tuition fees for every student they refer. By enabling this setting,  Language Institute A’s financial administrators gain access to the Commissions section on the pricing category form, where they set the commission rate to 10%.

When agent X refers a student who pays a $3,000 tuition fee, Classter calculates a $300 commission owed to X for that payment. Without this setting enabled, no commission percentage field would be available to configure, and Classter would have no way to calculate that $300 amount.

When to Use

This setting matters for institutions that work with agents, partners, or referrers who are compensated based on fees or payments collected from students.

When to Enable

Enable this when the institution needs to track or calculate commissions owed to third parties (such as recruitment agents or partners) based on student fees or payments.

When to Disable

Disable this when the institution does not work with commission-based arrangements, to keep the financial configuration simpler and avoid exposing unused commission-related options.

Notes

Prerequisites: None beyond having the financial module configured; additional commission-specific configuration (such as commission rates or agent assignments) would need to be set up elsewhere once this setting is enabled.

  • Service Pricing category is automatically inherited from educational program (Financial Settings > General Settings > Price Lists, Fees & Taxes > Price List Configuration)
  • Selecting a Price Category Is Mandatory (Financial Settings > General Settings > Price Lists, Fees & Taxes > Price List Configuration)
  • Assign First Pricing Category If None Is Auto Selected (Financial Settings > General Settings > Price Lists, Fees & Taxes > Price List Configuration)

K-12 vs Higher Education: This setting behaves the same regardless of whether Higher Education Mode (Enable Configuration for Higher Education) is enabled or disabled.
