Enable Automated Academic Registration Numbering

Updated on July 9, 2026

3 min to read

Overview

Setting label: Enable auto-generation of the Student Global Registration Number

Setting ID: Enable_Automated_Academic_Registration_Numbering

Location: Main Settings > General Settings > Student Form Registration tab, Default Values group

What This Setting Does

This setting controls whether Classter automatically generates the Global Registration Number of a _Student_ instead of requiring a staff member to type it in manually. The Global Registration Number is a unique academic identifier assigned to a _Student_ record, separate from any Student ID card number or national identification number.

Depending on the option chosen, the institution can turn automatic numbering off completely, let Classter generate and lock the number, or let Classter generate the number while still allowing an authorized user to change it afterwards.

Where It Is Used

Main Menu > Students > Students List > Create (or Edit) > Student form, Global Registration Number field.

Business Logic / Behavior

  • Disabled: the Global Registration Number field is left blank by the system and must be entered manually by the staff member creating or editing the _Student_.
  • Auto: Classter automatically generates the Global Registration Number when the _Student_ is saved, and the field is not editable by end users afterwards.
  • Auto (editable): Classter automatically generates the Global Registration Number, but an authorized user is still able to open the _Student_ record later and change the generated value.
  • The exact numbering pattern used when automatic generation is active is controlled by the related Automated Academic Registration Numbering Format setting.
  • Whether the numbering restarts per prefix or continues as one running sequence is controlled by the related Automated Academic Registration Numbering Seperate Incremental Per Prefix setting.
  • The list of _Student_ statuses for which the automatic numbering applies is controlled by the related Automated Academic Registration Numbering Statuses setting.

Example(s)

Alpha Institute sets this option to Auto. On 3 September 2026, registrar Helen A. creates a new _Student_ record for Marcus B. without typing anything into the Global Registration Number field. When Helen saves the record, Classter automatically assigns the value AI-2026-00147 to Marcus B., and the field becomes read-only on his Student form.

At Beta College the option is set to Auto (editable). Registrar Peter D. creates a new _Student_ record for Anna K.; Classter auto-generates BC-2026-00812. Because the option allows edits, Peter later opens Anna’s record and corrects the number to BC-2026-00812-B to match a legacy numbering scheme used before the migration.

When to Use

Institutions that want every _Student_ to receive a consistent, sequential Global Registration Number without relying on staff to type it correctly should enable automatic generation (Auto or Auto editable). Institutions that use an external or legacy numbering scheme that cannot be reproduced by a simple sequential pattern should keep the setting Disabled and enter the number manually.

K-12 vs Higher Education: This setting behaves the same regardless of whether Enable Configuration for Higher Education is on or off.
