Setting label: Enable Alternative assignments

Setting ID: Enable_Alternative_Assignments_In_Student_Educational_Programs

Location: Main Settings > General Settings > Student Form Registration tab, Educational Program Parameters group

 

What This Setting Does

This setting turns on one or more Alternative fields on the educational program section of a _Student_ record, in addition to the standard Main Group, Stream, Location, and Indicator fields. Each option activated adds a matching Alternative field that staff can fill in separately from the standard declaration, for example to record a secondary or backup assignment.

 

Where It Is Used

Main Menu > Students > Students List > Create (or Edit) > Educational Program section, Alternative Main Group / Alternative Stream / Alternative Location / Alternative Indicator fields.

 

Business Logic / Behavior

  • Main Group: when activated, an Alternative Main Group field appears on the educational program section alongside the standard Main Group field.
  • Stream: when activated, an Alternative Stream field appears alongside the standard Stream field.
  • Location: when activated, an Alternative Location field appears alongside the standard Location field.
  • Indicator: when activated, an Alternative Indicator field appears alongside the standard Indicator field.
  • More than one option can be activated at the same time, showing several Alternative fields together on the educational program section.
  • If no option is activated, none of the Alternative fields are shown and only the standard fields are available.

 

Example(s)

Alpha Institute activates Main Group and Location. When staff member Felix B. opens the educational program section for _Student_ Grace L., he now sees Alternative Main Group and Alternative Location fields next to the standard ones. Grace’s standard Main Group is Group A at the Downtown Campus, and Felix records Group B at the Riverside Campus in the Alternative fields as a backup option in case Group A reaches capacity.

 

When to Use

Enable the relevant option(s) when the institution needs to record a secondary or backup assignment alongside the standard Main Group, Stream, Location, or Indicator, for example to support waiting lists, overflow planning, or automatic reassignment logic. Leave the option unselected for any field that does not require an alternative.

Related settings:

  • Main Groups can be assigned based on (Main_Groups_Can_Be_Assigned_Based_On in Student Form Registration > Educational Program Parameters)
  • Alternative Main Group drop down should include only Groups of type (Alternative_Groups_Should_Include_Only_Groups_Of_Selected_Types in Student Form Registration > Educational Program Parameters)
  • Automatically set an alternative main Group (in create only) (Main_Groups_Auto_Set_An_Alternative_Main_Group in Student Form Registration > Educational Program Parameters)

K-12 vs Higher Education: This setting behaves the same regardless of whether Enable Configuration for Higher Education is on or off.
