Overview
Setting label: Main Groups can be assigned based on
Setting ID: Main_Groups_Can_Be_Assigned_Based_On
Location: Main Settings > General Settings > Student Form Registration tab, Educational Program Parameters group
What This Setting Does
This setting controls which _Groups_ can be selected as the Main _Group_ when registering a _Student_ educational program. It decides whether the drop down of available _Groups_ is limited to the ones the _Student_ is already enrolled in during the current academic period, or expanded to include every _Group_ that exists for the _Subject_ in the Curriculum, even if the _Student_ is not currently enrolled in it.
Where It Is Used
Main Menu > Students > Students List > Create (or Edit) > Educational Program section, Main Group field.
Business Logic / Behavior
- Enrolments (default): the Main Group drop-down only offers _Groups_ that already exist in the current Academic Period enrollments of the _Student_.
- Curriculum assignments: the Main Group drop-down offers any available _Group_ that exists in the _Subject_ defined in the Curriculum, even if that _Group_ does not appear in the _Student_’s current Academic Period enrollments.
Example(s)
Alpha Institute sets this option to Curriculum assignments. When academic staff member Julia F. opens the educational program section for _Student_ Kevin N., the Main Group drop down shows all 12 Groups defined in the Business Administration Curriculum, including Group C, which Kevin is not yet enrolled in during the current Fall 2026 period. Because the option is Curriculum assignments, Julia can still assign Kevin to Group C as his Main Group.
When to Use
Use Enrolments when the Main Group should always reflect an enrollment that already exists for the current period, keeping the drop down short and consistent with actual enrollments. Use Curriculum assignments when staff need to pre-assign a Main Group from the full Curriculum structure before or independently of the enrollment record being created, which is common in institutions using the College module.

K-12 vs Higher Education: This setting is specific to institutions using the College (Higher Education) module and applies to Main Group assignment logic used in Higher Education curricula. It has no effect at K-12 institutions that do not use the College module.
