Main Groups Group Should Be The First Active Of Same Grade Stream And Type Of

Updated on July 9, 2026

Overview

Setting label: The Alternative Group should be the first active found in the period with the same Grade/Stream of specific Group Types

Setting ID: Main_Groups_Group_Should_Be_The_First_Active_Of_Same_Grade_Stream_And_Type_Of

Location: Main Settings > General Settings > Student Form Registration tab, Educational Program Parameters group

What This Setting Does

This setting defines the rule Classter follows when automatically selecting the Alternative Main Group for a _Student_. It restricts the automatic selection to a specific _Group_ type: Classter will look for the first active _Group_ in the current period that shares the same _Grade_ and Stream as the _Student_’s standard Main Group, and that also belongs to the _Group_ type selected here.

Where It Is Used

Main Menu > Students > Students List > Create > Educational Program section, Alternative Main Group field (automatic selection logic).

Business Logic / Behavior

  • This setting only takes effect when Automatically set an alternative main Group is enabled.
  • The selected _Group_ type must be one of the types already included in the Alternative Main Group drop down should include only Groups of type setting; otherwise the rule cannot find a valid match.
  • Classter searches active _Groups_ in the current period that match the _Student_’s Grade and Stream and belong to the selected _Group_ type, and assigns the first one found as the Alternative Main Group.
  • If no active _Group_ of the selected type matches the _Student_’s Grade and Stream, the Alternative Main Group is left unset by the automatic rule.

Example(s)

Alpha Institute selects the Group type Support Group in this setting. Registrar Diane F. creates a new educational program registration for _Student_ Leo M. in Grade 8, Stream B. Classter scans the active Support Groups for the current period and finds Grade 8 Stream B Support Group as the first match, automatically setting it as Leo’s Alternative Main Group.

When to Use

Use this setting when the institution wants alternative Group assignment to be limited to one clear, predictable Group type, such as a support or overflow group category matching the _Student_’s own Grade and Stream.

Notes

Prerequisite: Automatically set an alternative main Group must be enabled, and the chosen Group type should also be selected in Alternative Main Group drop down should include only Groups of type.

K-12 vs Higher Education: This setting behaves the same regardless of whether Enable Configuration for Higher Education is on or off.

Related configuration: _Group_ Type (Main Settings > Dropdown Lists > System > Group Type) – manages the list of _Group_ types offered here, used to identify the _Group_ type Classter searches for when automatically selecting the Alternative Main _Group_.
