What This Setting Does
This setting defines an alternative rule Classter can follow when automatically selecting the Alternative Main Group for a _Student_. Instead of matching by _Group_ type, it matches by a specific timetable Zone section: Classter looks for the first active _Group_ in the current period that shares the same _Grade_ and Stream as the _Student_’s standard Main Group and also belongs to the Zone section selected here.
Where It Is Used
Main Menu > Students > Students List > Create > Educational Program section, Alternative Main Group field (automatic selection logic).
Business Logic / Behavior
- This setting only takes effect when Automatically set an alternative main Group is enabled and Enable Sections in Student Educational Programs is set to Select Zone or Select Section.
- Classter searches active _Groups_ in the current period that match the _Student_’s Grade and Stream and belong to the selected Zone section, and assigns the first one found as the Alternative Main Group.
- If no active _Group_ matching the Grade, Stream, and Zone section is found, the Alternative Main Group is left unset by this rule.
- This rule can be used together with, or instead of, the Group-type-based rule described in the setting The Alternative Group should be the first active found in the period with the same Grade/Stream of specific Group Types.
Example(s)
Alpha Institute enables Select Zone in Enable Sections in Student Educational Programs and selects Zone North in this setting. When academic staff Farid R. creates a new educational program registration for _Student_ Zoe P. in Grade 10, Stream C, Classter finds Grade 10 Stream C Zone North as the first active matching _Group_ and automatically sets it as Zoe’s Alternative Main Group.
When to Use
Use this setting when the institution organizes alternative Group assignment around timetable zones or sections rather than Group type, for example to keep a _Student_’s alternative assignment in the same physical area or timetable block as their main enrollment.
Notes
Prerequisite: Automatically set an alternative main Group must be enabled, and Enable Sections in Student Educational Programs must be set to Select Zone or Select Section.

K-12 vs Higher Education: This setting behaves the same regardless of whether Enable Configuration for Higher Education is on or off.
