Allow relatives to send also the message as a “Carbon Copy” via email

Updated on July 8, 2026

Overview

Setting: Allow relatives to send also the message as a Carbon Copy via email

Setting ID: Enable_CC_For_Relatives_On_Messaging

Location: Main Settings > General Settings > Messaging & Notifications tab, Basic Settings group

What This Setting Does

This is an on/off switch that controls whether relatives (such as parents or guardians) composing a message in Classter can add extra people in a Carbon Copy (CC) field, so those people receive a copy of the message by email in addition to the main recipient.

Where It Is Used

Internal Messaging > Compose Message screen. When a relative opens the message composer (basic or advanced version), an additional CC field appears letting them add more recipients, but only if this setting is enabled.

Business Logic / Behavior

  • When enabled, the message composer used by relatives shows an extra list where they can add more recipients in CC.
  • When disabled, no CC option is shown to relatives in the composer, and their message is sent only to the originally selected recipient.
  • This setting only affects the relative’s own message composer; it is independent from the separate setting that lets students CC their relatives.

Example(s)

Alpha Institute enables this setting so that when a parent, Elena M., sends a message to her daughter’s homeroom teacher, she can also CC her husband, Thomas M., by email.

Before enabling: Elena’s compose screen only lets her pick one recipient (the teacher), with no CC option.

After enabling: Elena’s compose screen shows an extra CC field, and she adds Thomas’s email address so he receives a copy of the same message.

When to Use

When to Enable

Enable this when the institution wants to let relatives keep other family members or contacts informed by copying them on messages sent through Classter, without needing those people to be direct recipients.

When to Disable

Disable this when the institution wants to keep messaging between relatives and staff limited strictly to the selected recipients, for privacy or simplicity reasons.

Notes

  • Related settings:
  • Allow Students to send also the message as a Carbon Copy via email to connected Relatives (Enable_CC_For_Students_On_Messaging in Messaging & Notifications > Basic Settings)
  • Recipients are able to see all message receivers included in the To field (Recipients_Can_See_All_Message_Receivers_Included_In_The_To_Field in Messaging & Notifications > Basic Settings)

K-12 vs Higher Education: This setting behaves the same regardless of the type of institution.
