Overview
Setting: Notification Service Message Type
Setting ID: NotificationServiceMessageType
Location: Main Settings > General Settings > Messaging & Notifications tab, Notifications Service group
What This Setting Does
This setting defines whether the automated notification service sends its notifications as internal Classter messages, as emails, or as SMS text messages.
Where It Is Used
This setting runs automatically in the background as part of the notification service; there is no separate screen where staff chooses this per notification. It only takes effect when the Enable Notification Service setting is turned on.
Business Logic / Behavior
- The available options are Internal Message, Email, and SMS.
- Whichever option is selected here is used for every notification sent by the automated notification service, across all its configured rules.
- This setting has no effect unless Enable Notification Service is turned on.
Example(s)
Alpha Institute wants automated notifications, such as absence alerts, to reach staff even when they are away from their desks, so they set this setting to SMS.
From that point on, whenever the notification service’s rules trigger a notification, it is delivered as an SMS text message rather than as an internal Classter message or an email.
When to Use
Use this setting to match the delivery channel of automated notifications to how the institution’s staff prefer to be reached, for example email for routine alerts or SMS for urgent, time-sensitive ones.
Notes
Prerequisites: this setting only has an effect when Enable Notification Service is turned on. SMS delivery also requires the institution to have SMS balance available.

K-12 vs Higher Education: This setting behaves the same regardless of the type of institution.
