Overview
On the Academic Progress area of the Student Portal and Parent Portal, a _Student_’s exam and assessment results can be shown together with a comparison chart: the _Student_’s own mark next to the average mark achieved by their whole _Group_ (class) for the same exam or assessment. This comparison lets a _Student_ or Parent see, at a glance, how the _Student_’s performance compares with their classmates as a whole.
The Hide Student-Group Grade Comparison Chart setting controls whether this class/group average comparison is shown or hidden. It does not affect the _Student_’s own mark, which is always shown; it only decides whether the class/group average figure is shown alongside it.
What This Setting Does
This is an on/off (enabled/disabled) setting with the following effect:
- Disabled (default): the comparison chart on the exam/assessment Statistics screen shows both the _Student_’s own mark and the average mark achieved by their _Group_ for the same exam, so the _Student_ and Parent can see how the result compares with the class as a whole.
- Enabled: the class/group average is left out of the comparison chart entirely. Only the _Student_’s own results (and, where applicable, the overall _Subject_ average) continue to be shown; no class/group average figure or comparison graph appears anywhere the setting applies.

If this setting is selected, then on the Student’s Academic Progress Tab, the marks comparison diagram will not contain a comparison with the average Class mark.

Where It Is Used
This setting applies to the exam and assessment Statistics screen within the Academic Progress area of the Student Portal and Parent Portal, where a _Student_’s marks for a specific exam or assessment are shown together with comparison charts and gauges.
- In the Student Portal: a _Student_ opening their Academic Progress / exam Statistics for a given assessment sees (or does not see, depending on this setting) the class/group average alongside their own mark.
- In the Parent Portal: a Parent viewing the same Academic Progress / exam Statistics screen for their child sees the same behavior.
- The same comparison graphs also appear on the _Student_’s Portfolio view, where this setting has the same effect.
The setting is read each time these screens are opened, so a change takes effect immediately the next time a _Student_ or Parent opens the Academic Progress / Statistics screen – no logout or additional action is required.
Business Logic / Behavior
The following behavior can be confirmed directly from the setting’s design:
- Default behavior: if the setting has never been changed, it is disabled, meaning the class/group average comparison is shown.
- The setting applies uniformly across the institution – it is not possible to show the comparison for some _Groups_ or some _Students_ and hide it for others; it is a single on/off switch for all Academic Progress / Statistics screens covered by it.
- When enabled, the class/group average is not only hidden from view but is not worked out for display in these screens at all – the comparison is removed rather than simply covered up.
- The overall _Subject_ average figure (separate from the class/group average) is not affected by this setting and continues to display as normal.
Assumption (not directly confirmed in the setting’s own logic, but consistent with its purpose and naming): this setting exists to let each institution balance transparency (helping _Students_ and Parents understand relative standing, which can support motivation) against privacy and well-being (avoiding unnecessary comparison or competition between classmates).
Example(s)
Example 1 – Disabled (default)
Alpha Academy leaves this setting at its default value, disabled. A _Student_, George S., opens his Academic Progress area to review his results for a recent Mathematics assessment. The Statistics screen shows his own mark together with the average mark of his _Group_ for the same assessment, so he can see that he scored above the class average. His Parent, viewing the same screen from the Parent Portal, sees the same comparison.
Example 2 – Enabled
Beta Institute enables this setting to reduce comparison and competition between classmates. A _Student_, Maria P., opens the same Academic Progress Statistics screen for a Science assessment. She sees her own mark and the overall _Subject_ average, but no class/group average figure or comparison graph is shown – she can review her own performance without seeing how it compares to the rest of her _Group_.
When to Use
When to Enable
- The institution wants to reduce comparison or competition between classmates over exam and assessment results.
- The institution has a policy of not sharing class/group-level average performance with individual _Students_ or Parents, for privacy or well-being reasons.
- The institution prefers _Students_ and Parents to focus on individual progress rather than relative standing within the _Group_.
When to Disable
- The institution wants _Students_ and Parents to understand how a result compares with the rest of the _Group_, for example to support motivation or highlight where extra support may help.
- The institution already shares class/group averages in other communications (report cards, parent meetings) and sees no reason to hide the same information in the Portal.
- The institution values transparency around class performance as part of its general communication with families.
Notes
K-12 versus Higher Education Mode
This setting behaves identically whether the institution is running in K-12 mode or in Higher Education mode. There is no functional difference in what is shown or hidden between the two modes.
Prerequisites
No other setting needs to be configured first for this setting to take effect. It works directly on the existing Academic Progress / exam Statistics and Portfolio screens, wherever a class/group average comparison would otherwise be shown.
Related Settings
