Understanding the Outcomes’ Settings
1. What does ‘Use Outcomes’ mean?
The ‘Use Outcomes’ setting allows assessments to be broken down into specific learning objectives or skills, called outcomes. When enabled, this option lets educators define and assess multiple outcomes per assessment, providing a more detailed analysis of student performance rather than just assigning a single overall mark.
2. What is the ‘Final Mark from Outcome Can Change’ setting?
This setting controls whether the final assessment mark can be manually altered after being calculated from the outcome marks. When set to “YES,” the end user can adjust the final mark, even if it has been automatically calculated from the outcomes. If set to “NO,” the final mark will be fixed based on the sum of the outcome marks.
3. What does ‘Use Hierarchy of Outcomes (Skills/Outcome Structure)’ do?
This setting enables a parent-child relationship between outcomes. When active, you can group outcomes into a hierarchical structure, where higher-level (parent) outcomes represent broader skills, and lower-level (child) outcomes represent more specific objectives. This structure allows educators to mark at the parent level or independently mark at each level based on how detailed the assessment should be.
4. How does ‘Low Level Outcomes Inherit Value from Parent Outcomes’ work?
When this setting is enabled, any marks assigned to parent outcomes will automatically be inherited by the associated lower-level outcomes. This streamlines the grading process, allowing educators to assign a mark at the higher level, which then applies to all related child outcomes. If the setting is turned off, each outcome (including lower levels) must be marked independently.
5. What does ‘Use Dropdown Value for Marking Low Level Outcomes’ mean?
This setting enables the use of a dropdown menu for marking low-level outcomes. Instead of manually entering marks, educators can select from predefined values in a dropdown. This feature is useful when marking needs to follow a consistent scale or specific rating system across various outcomes, making the process faster and more uniform.
