Enable Students selection for mark sampling by end users

Updated on February 18, 2025

3 min to read

Academic Settings / Marking Settings / General Settings / Assessments & Assignments / Assessment Workflow / Enable Students selection for mark sampling by end users.

This setting allows users to view all students after the second grading is completed and provides the option to exclude a student and replace them with another.

Prerequisites

The following settings must be enabled for this feature to function correctly: Academic Settings > Marking Settings > General Settings > Assessments & Assignments > Assessment Workflow >

  1. Enable Assessments Workflow
  2. Define Percentage of Assessment Result for Mark Reviewing
  3. Minimum Number of Pupils for Marking Approval

In assessment processes, a subset of student marks is often reviewed to ensure grading consistency and quality. While automated sampling methods facilitate this, they may present challenges in certain scenarios. To address these, Classter offers a feature that allows end-users (back-office staff) to manually select students for mark review sampling, ensuring greater flexibility and control.

How the Initial Sampling Process Works

1. Independent Group Sampling (2nd prerequisite setting)

When an assessment is conducted for a subject with multiple groups, students are selected independently from each group based on the sampling percentage.

Example Scenario:

A subject is taught in three groups:

  • Group A: 10 students
  • Group B: 5 students
  • Group C: 15 students

If the sampling percentage is set to 10%, the system selects:

  • 1 student from Group A (10% of 10)
  • 1 student from Group B (10% of 5)
  • 2 students from Group C (10% of 15)

Total students selected: 4 instead of the expected 3 out of 30, since the selection occurs per group instead of across the entire subject.

2. Delays in Assessment Completion

If one group’s assessment is significantly delayed, the entire sampling process is put on hold until all groups have submitted their marks. This results in inefficiencies, as assessments from other groups cannot proceed with the review process. This takes us to the next step.

Solution: Enable Students Selection for Mark Sampling by End Users

To address these challenges, Classter provides an option for end-users to manually select students for assessment sampling instead of relying solely on automated selection. This ensures that sampling can proceed even if some groups experience delays.

How to Enable Manual Selection

Navigate to Academic Settings > Marking Settings > General Settings > Assessments & Assignments > Assessment Workflow > Enable Students selection for mark sampling by end users.

  • After the second grading phase, the system presents all students available for sampling.
  • The end-user can exclude a student and manually select another in their place.
  • This prevents the process from being blocked by groups that have not yet completed marking.

Considerations for Manual Selection

1. Reducing Sampling Delays

By enabling manual selection, end-users can immediately proceed with mark review without waiting for all groups to finish grading.

2. Balancing Randomness vs. Control

While this method gives end-users greater flexibility, it reduces the randomness of the selection process. Institutions should ensure that selection remains unbiased and representative of the student population.

By enabling manual student selection, institutions can enhance the efficiency and accuracy of assessment reviews, ensuring a timely and fair evaluation process.
